Preventing Infection through Proper Wound Care

Preventing Infection through Proper Wound Care

Wound care is an important part of recovery. Proper wound care can help prevent infection and other severe complications. It can also speed up the healing process and minimizes scarring. It’s not ideal to leave your senior loved one’s wound untreated, especially if it’s an open wound. You should take appropriate action immediately or ask for help from concierge nursing in Virginia because once the wound has healed, there won’t be any risk of infection anymore.

If your senior loved one gets a wound such as cuts and scrapes, here are some things you can do to help treat their wound and prevent infection:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
Before anything else, wash your hands to keep them clean and avoid infection.
  • Stop the bleeding.
Apply gentle pressure to the wound with a clean cloth and elevate the wound until the bleeding stops.
  • Clean the wound.
Rinse it under running tap water and wash around the wound with soap to prevent infection. But make sure that you don’t get soap in the wound.
  • Apply an antibiotic.
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly to help prevent scarring.
  • Cover the wound.
Always cover the wound after applying first-aid because it keeps the wound clean.
